Plans for an apartment community across the street from Brookfield Square mall are moving forward, with a Milwaukee firm buying the development site.

Mandel Group Inc. has purchased 23 acres at 16420 W. Blue Mound Road, Brookfield, from Bernard and Robert Ruf for an undisclosed price.

The land sale was brokered by Jim Young of James T. Barry Co./Colliers International. The land was listed at $1.8 million, and the sale price was close to that amount, Young said.

Mandel Group plans to develop 144 apartments on the land. The apartments would be phase one of a development, announced in May, known as Georgetown Square.

The proposed apartments have received preliminary approvals from city officials, and construction could begin later this year. Mandel also plans to eventually develop a second phase, with 57 condos, on 4 acres that would be bought from Storm Golf miniature golf course and driving range, 16120 W. Blue Mound Road.

Georgetown Square would be west of Fountain Square, a 17-acre retail development proposed for the Storm Golf property by Continental Properties Co. That project, which would include a Bed Bath & Beyond and Ashley Furniture stores, is under review by city officials.
