North Avenue Dam Pedestrian Bridge
4/25/2004 - The new North Avenue Dam Pedestrian Bridge is well underway and expected to open in Spring 2004. The bridge lands on either side of the Milwaukee River south of North Avenue, and is positioned to rest on the structure of the former North Avenue Dam. This important pedestrian link will be accessible from Riverboat Road and will be easily accessed by residents of RiverCrest.
The RiverCrest site plan is designed in response to the City's initiative to construct this newest link across the river. Riverboat Road has been reconstructed by the City to provide public access to this exciting stretch of the Milwaukee River. A staircase is being constructed as part of the first phase of RiverCrest, providing pedestrian access from Commerce Street directly to the bridge. A stunning overview of the bridge will be possible from Commerce Street at the top of this staircase, and from the adjoining "Bridgeview Park" that is also under development as part of the RiverCrest development.
The bridge will be approximately 165 feet in length and will be a minimum of 10 feet in width. Development of the bridge was widely supported by adjoining neighborhoods, elected officials, and the River Revitalization Foundation, a non-profit group whose mission is the protection and enhancement of the river environs.
The bridge will serve as an important link between neighborhoods and provide a pedestrian "short-cut" to the lakefront for RiverCrest residents. The bridge is located at the point where the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan converge to a separation of only six blocks. A quick walk, jog or bike ride over the bridge will deliver RiverCrest residents to the Lafayette Hill and McKinley Marina.
"It's a Neighborhood Thing"
RiverCrest is all about neighborhood. Take a short walk to catch the latest movie or dinner. Dash to the store for that forgotten ingredient. Run your dog in the park. Live where all of your daily needs and desires are just a short walk away.
